He often helps clients explore the stories they tell themselves about who they are and what they have been through, with the goal of developing more compassionate, empowering narratives that support healing and growth. Ultimately, he sees counseling as a process that helps individuals build on their strengths, make intentional choices, and become the authors of lives that reflect their values, aspirations, and fullest potential.
With his past work experience involving complex presentations and individuals experiencing crisis, he considers his specialty to be a trauma-informed approach that is applicable to a variety of symptom presentations. Phil enjoys working with clients experiencing anxiety and depression as much as clients with severe bipolar or schizophrenia diagnoses, and considers his approach integrative in that he tries to tailor the interventions to client needs.
Interventions he has utilized include: CBT, DBT, MI, SFBT, Narrative, and IFS theories, with an over-arching Person-Centered approach and Humanistic theory as a guiding light. Often in practice what this looks like is after he discusses what brought you in for therapy, he provides education on what approaches he would like to utilize and allow clients to choose the pathway forward towards healing.
Phil holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Social Work degrees from Youngstown State University. He is also a member of the National Association of Social Workers, International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry Research and Psi Chi, the Psychology Academic Honor Society.
When asked what he’s awesome at, Phile replied, “I am at my best when building strong, authentic relationships with clients and creating a space where they feel safe, understood, and empowered to grow. I believe the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy, and I strive to meet each person with curiosity, empathy, and respect. I also frequently use narrative approaches, which I describe as examining the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, where we’ve been, and what we’re capable of becoming. By exploring these stories, clients can often discover new perspectives, recognize strengths that have been overlooked, and create meaningful, lasting change.”
