Shaiyla Hakeem, LPC

Shaiyla believes mental wellness takes a consistent effort and cannot be achieved overnight. Diligent work to reach optimal mental health leads to transforming into the best version of yourself. Specializing in grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders, Shaiyla’s primary practice includes military veterans, first responders, LGBTQ, and marginalized minorities.

Shaiyla is a retired U.S. Army veteran with more than 23 years of service. She holds a Master of Arts in Strategic Communications, Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (both from National University), a Master of Science in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Bachelor of Arts in Communications (both from Youngstown State University). She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Chi Sigma Iota Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society International, Phi Kappa Phi Collegiate Honor Society, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Shaiyla is a licensed funeral director and embalmer for the state of Ohio.

When asked what Shaiyla believes she is awesome at, Shaiyla replied, “I am awesome at adapting and overcoming by scaling the walls that life places in my path; Resiliency is paramount.”

“I have been obsessed with the Titanic after learning about it on PBS. In kindergarten, I attended my first book fair. My teacher recommended a Barbie coloring book, but I had my eyes set on a bibliography about the RMS Titanic, despite my poor reading skills at the time. I still have the book.”
